WASTE POLLUTION
Road maintenance and rehabilitation program has been actively implemented within USM SFMP whereby various contractors were appointed to execute the activities. USM SFMP has introduced waste management system to all contractors’ camps whereby all solid waste are collected and sent to Lahad Datu municipal dumping site. Sewage and septic tanks were constructed 50 m away from existing watercourses.
In rehabilitation program especially restoration activities, fertilizers such as control-released fertilizer and common NPK formulations, are usually used to improve nutrient availability for potted seedlings in the nursery. While in the field, pesticides are used during the initial stage of planting to eradicate weeds and assist seedling establishment. Some project i.e. WWF-Malaysia advocate no use of chemicals in their management and operation. Generally, the application, dosage, type, storage and disposal of chemicals used in forestry activities in USM SFMP are in accordance to FSC standards. No cost involved.
