The Sabah Forestry Department has obtained the ISO 9001:2008 certificate on Sustainable Forest Management from Bureau Veritas Certification (Malaysia) Sdn Bhd. This was disclosed by Datuk Sam Mannan, the Chief Conservator of Forests (CCF), during the certificate presentation ceremony which was held at the Sabah Forestry Department Headquarters on the 13th October 2010. The certificate was personally presented by the CEO of Bureau Veritas Certification (Malaysia) Sdn.Bhd., Ir. Hj. Othman Abdul Kadir.
Bureau Veritas Certification (Malaysia) Sdn. Bhd. is one of 11 certification bodies registered under the Department of Standards Malaysia. This certification body is also recognized and accredited by the largest national and international certification bodies. Bureau Veritas Certification (M) Sdn Bhd performed the assessment from April 2010 to July 2010 and thereafter awarded the department, with the ISO 9001:2008 certificate, which is valid for three years until 26th August 2013.
The scope of the ISO 9001:2008 certification of the Sabah Forestry Department is Sustainable Forest Management (SFM) comprising of six (6) core processes that encompass:
(i) Reduced Impact Logging exercise carried out in Deramakot Forestry District;
(ii) Collection and Assessment of Timber Royalty in Beluran Forestry District;
(iii) Preparation of Herbarium Specimens at the Botanical Section of the Sabah Forest Research Centre;
(iv) Occupation Permit within Forest Reserves in Kalabakan Forestry District;
(v) Preparation of Investigation Papers by the Enforcement and Investigation Division of the Sabah Forestry Department Headquarters; and
(vi) Forest Rangers and Forest Guards Training Course by the Sabah Forestry Institute, Telupid.
The latest ISO 9001:2008 certificate awarded to the Sabah Forestry Department is a continuation from two (2) previous accreditation certificates. The first certificate was obtained in year 2000 (MS ISO 9002:1994 version) whereby the second certificate was in year 2004 (MS ISO 9001:2000 version). Both were awarded by the Malaysia Administrative Modernization and Management Planning Unit (MAMPU).
The CCF also thanked the dedicated team in the department assigned to complete the certification programme, headed by Roslan Lalete, Head of the Innovation Division.
